Thailand's Environs

map-thai_150x182.gif (6986 bytes)Thailand borders with the countries of Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Laos and Cambodia. To the country's east coast borders the Gulf of Thailand and to the west coast adjoins the Andaman Sea. Thailand is divided into four main sections: the fertile, central plains of the Chao Phraya River; the 300m high north-east plateau; the mountains of Northern Thailand; and the rainforested southern peninsula. The highest peak in Thailand is Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai province with an altitude of 2596 meters.

Climate:

Thailand remains quite hot throughout most of the year because it lies within the humid tropics, similar to Myanamar (Burma), Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Average temperatures are about 29oC, ranging in Bangkok from 35oC in April to 17oC in December.

There are basically three seasons: the cool season (November to February), the hot season (April to May), and the rainy season (June to October), with downpours rarely last more than a couple of hours.
