| Bathing baby: Skip the soap Plain water may be the best way to clean a newborn's delicate
skin, says Alfred Lane, M.D., associate professor of dermatology and pediatrics at
Stanford University. Soap may deplete the skin's natural protective oils and cause
dryness, chapping and rashes. Babies don't even need a daily bath with soap, he notes;
think of bathing as a social event rather than a hygienic one. Instead, you should
concentrate on spot-cleaning the nooks and crannies--eyes, ears, nose, folds of cheeks,
neck and genitals. He recommends cleansing with a water-soaked cotton ball or soft flannel
washcloth. Your aim should be to remove anything--perspiration, saliva, vomit, food--that
might irritate skin. |
