Thonglor Soi 38Although the number of food hawkers in Thailand are too numerous to count we are focusing this article on the food hawkers in the well-known Sukhumvit Soi 38, across from the junction of Thonglor and Sukhumvit.   Most of the food hawkers here are open usually in the evening and close in the wee morning hours or when they run out of food to sell, which ever comes first.

You can find many types of delicious food from noodles to satay, lemonade to stewed pork knuckles.   There are over 20 small food vendors in this small soi (alley).  On a typical weekend, starting on Friday nights, this soi is jam-packed and buzzing with people looking for a quick, inexpensive and delicious meal.

Parking is relatively easy, drive a bit further into the soi, where you can usually park and then tip the parking guides about 5-10 Baht upon departure.  From the parking area to the food stands is less than 1 minute.  Very close and convenient.  Sometimes you will find cars driving through the soi, stopping to order some food at the stands and then later making a u-turn back to pick up the food.  Very similar to a McDonald's drive-thru.

Although there are many delicious food hawkers on Sukhumvit Soi 38, there are four stands that we highly recommend.  One sells noodles, another sells porridge (congee), the third sells desserts and the fourth sells drinks.  A full-course meal!

Wonton Noodle Soup with crabmeat and roast pork (Bah Mee Bpoo, Moo Daeng, Kee-oh)

Usually open daily for order starting around 8PM (20:00) in the evening, this is one of the best noodle soups served in Bangkok.  Equivalent to what most Westerners know as "Wonton Noodle  Soup", you can custom order the Noodle with or without Soup, and also the inclusion or exclusion of roast pork (moo daeng), crab meat (neua bpoo) and wonton (kee-oh).  Recommendation is to order the noodles with the soup on the side. (Bah-mee haeng).

Dishes start at 35 baht per bowl of noodle for the basic dish, which includes the crabmeat, roast pork, wontons and some green veggies.  You can then add or remove toppings and the prices will be adjusted accordingly.  The order is served with four condiments, including fish sauce, dried chili, sugar and vinegar with sliced halapeno chilies.

Operated by two brothers, this food stand, which has been around for many years now, has to be one of the most popular food vendors on Sukhumvit Soi 38.

Porridge, a.k.a. Congee (Tjoke)

Porridge (Congee)Open daily from around 6PM (18:00), this food vendor serves up an awesome bowl of porridge (tjoke).  You can choose from a variety of ingredients, ranging from ground pork balls to century eggs (savory eggs), to add to your porridge.  Garnished with thinly-sliced ginger and minced scallion (green onion) and you have the makings of a hearty meal.

Starting at 20-25 baht per bowl of porridge with ground pork balls this is one dish that shouldn't be missed especially if you are a porridge lover.   Add a dash of pepper and soy sauce and you're all set to go.

Tjoke (Porridge or Congee)This food stand, which has also been around for many years, is operated by two sisters and is second only to the wonton noodle stand in terms of popularity.  On most days they are sold-out by 9:30-10 PM.  Yes its that good and popular!  You can also call to pre-order your porridge at:   (Within Bangkok) 381-1614.

Lemonade (nahm mah-now) and other refreshing drinks.

Beverage VendorEnjoy a nice tall, cold and refreshing glass or lemonade or orange juice with your meal at this beverage stand.  This beverage stand is conveniently situated between the wonton noodle stand and the porridge stand.   A glass of tangy but sweet lemonade costs only 10 baht.

Refreshing Desserts

Enjoy a bowl of mixed desserts, served hot or cold.  You can select from a variety of ingredients which includes dates, ginko nuts, chestnuts and much more or you can order the combination called Tao Teung in Thai.  Prices start at 15-20 baht for the combination.  Definitely a great way to complete your dining experience on Sukhumvit Soi 38.
